Bartlett Tree Experts is a nationwide tree and shrub care company with a research and diagnostic lab located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Diagnostic Lab services all Bartlett offices in North America (140+), evaluating over 16,000 plant samples each year. The Diagnostic Lab is also a member of the National Plant Diagnostic Network of state and federal diagnostic labs and is a major contributor of diagnoses to the National Data Repository.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the Diagnostic Lab for six months (approx. May-October 2026). This is a full-time internship that supports all routine testing procedures and maintains essential laboratory functions. We are an energetic team that focuses on providing excellent diagnostic services to our clients. The ideal candidate is comfortable working under high pressure, performing repetitive tasks, and is eager to learn about plant diseases that impact trees and ornamental landscapes. Pay: $ 20.00 per hour, 40 hours per week
Interns will receive training for all laboratory responsibilities they perform.
• Learn, understand, and adhere to all lab safety protocols and company safety policies
• Open, sort, and troubleshoot daily mail delivery of samples
• Prepare and process roots for various disease screenings
• Prepare culture media
• Assist diagnosticians with culturing and plating
• Prepare and process samples for PCR and ELISA testing
• Perform DNA extraction using manual extraction methods
• General laboratory maintenance: wash dishes, manage autoclave trash, and regular equipment maintenance
• Work closely with lab technicians and regularly communicate with supervisor and diagnostic lab staff
Additional Activities:
•Optional: design and conduct an approved independent project
•Participate in Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory outreach events and tours
•Attend scheduled intern learning experiences
Preferred Qualifications
• Strong interest in plant pathology, entomology, arboriculture, or ornamental plants
• Experience working in any of the following: retail, food service, healthcare, or childcare
